BVIFSC Conducts Financial Literacy Survey

Tortola – British Virgin Islands – 12 April, 2011 –The BVI Financial Services Commission today announced it will conduct a baseline survey to gauge the knowledge of the BVI population with regards to financial literacy. The survey will be conducted over a three-week period from 19 April 2011 to 3 May 2011. Interviewers will make calls on weekdays between 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on weekends between 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Survey participants will be selected from a random sample of land and mobile telephone numbers that do not have names attached to them and interviewers will not ask anyone to identify themselves. The responses provided to the survey will be anonymous and will be kept confidential.

Interviewers will ask the questions in order as they are laid out in the questionnaire and record the responses. Survey participants will never be pressured to answer any question. The survey is of individuals aged 18 and over and anyone under 18 should not participate in the survey. The questions in the survey were designed to capture a mixture of people's behavior, attitudes and knowledge with regards to money matters. The information collected in the survey will be used to inform the FSC's newly established Financial Literacy Programme, which aims to improve financial literacy in the territory. One of the objectives of the programme is to educate the public on the basics of finance and how to manage their money as well as their general estate. The survey will be supervised and managed by professionals from the Development Planning Unit.
